Job Description:
Job Description Job Description At WHOOP, we're on a mission to
unlock human performance and healthspan. WHOOP empowers members to
perform at a higher level through a deeper understanding of their
bodies and daily lives. As a Staff Electrical Engineer on the WHOOP
Hardware team, you will lead the architecture, design, and delivery
of complex embedded signal acquisition and transduction subsystems
within highly integrated human performance products. You will work
closely with Electrical, Mechanical, Firmware, Manufacturing,
Supply Chain, and Software teams to translate system-level
requirements into robust, production-ready hardware. WHOOP products
integrate wireless connectivity and multiple sensing modalities in
a small, low-power form factor, requiring exceptional mixed-signal
design and signal-chain rigor. This role emphasizes end-to-end
signal-chain performance—including dynamic range,
timing/synchronization, noise, latency, and fidelity—plus
disciplined hardware/firmware/algorithm co-design. You will be a
hardware technical lead who is fluent in DSP fundamentals and
data-driven debug, able to define requirements, influence
architecture choices, and partner effectively through bring-up,
tuning, and validation. RESPONSIBILITIES: Lead the architecture and
delivery of embedded signal acquisition/transduction subsystems;
own electrical specs, performance metrics, and execution plan.
Design low-power, low-noise mixed-signal hardware from component
selection through system integration, including schematic capture
and PCB layout/review. Drive signal and power integrity strategy
(grounding, isolation, coupling mitigation) and EMI/EMC robustness
in a tightly integrated wireless wearable. Define clocking, timing,
and synchronization across domains; set and verify sampling and
latency budgets. Translate system and algorithm goals into
measurable electrical requirements and verification plans (dynamic
range/noise, bandwidth, power modes, calibration). Partner with
firmware and algorithm/DSP teams on latency-sensitive, real-time
streaming data paths and interface contracts (buffering,
timestamps, observability). Lead bring-up, debug, and
characterization using lab instrumentation; correlate bench
behavior with device telemetry and end-to-end performance metrics.
Build analysis/validation workflows (Python/MATLAB) using test
vectors, golden datasets, and automated characterization/regression
to support tuning and production readiness. Travel up to 15%
domestically and internationally to partners, suppliers, and
contract. QUALIFICATIONS: BS or higher in Electrical Engineering
(or related); 7 years in relevant hardware engineering roles.
Proven ownership of embedded electronics from architecture through
schematic, PCB layout/review (e.g. via Altium), bring-up, and
production release (e.g. via Arena). Strong circuit design
fundamentals spanning mixed-signal design, power, and digital
interfaces in low-power systems. Demonstrated success delivering
low-noise, interference-resilient signal chains, including noise
budgeting, grounding/isolation, coupling mitigation, and EMI/EMC
robustness. Experience defining sampling and timing/synchronization
requirements for embedded acquisition systems (clock domains,
jitter sensitivity, multi-rate considerations). Hands-on debug and
characterization expertise using standard lab instrumentation
(scope, logic analyzer, spectrum analyzer, etc.). Effective
cross-functional partner to firmware and modeling/DSP teams: able
to translate performance goals into hardware requirements,
interface/observability hooks, and validation plans. Working
fluency in DSP fundamentals (sampling/aliasing, filtering concepts,
precision/fixed-point tradeoffs) sufficient to drive hardware
architecture choices and end-to-end performance debugging.
Data-driven validation mindset and tooling experience
(Python/MATLAB or equivalent) to analyze captured datasets,
generate test vectors, and support automated
characterization/regression. Experience building miniaturized
wearables or other highly integrated wireless consumer devices with
challenging interference/coexistence constraints desired. Prior
experience with latency-sensitive, real-time streaming data paths
in low-power devices, including cross-functional performance tuning
across hardware/firmware/algorithms desired. This role is based in
the WHOOP office located in Boston, MA. The successful candidate
must be prepared to relocate if necessary to work out of the
Boston, MA office. Interested in the role, but don’t meet every
qualification? We encourage you to still apply! At WHOOP, we
believe there is much more to a candidate than what is written on
paper, and we value character as much as experience. As we continue
to build a diverse and inclusive environment, we encourage anyone
who is interested in this role to apply. WHOOP is an Equal
Opportunity Employer and participates in E-verify to determine
employment eligibility. It is unlawful in Massachusetts to require
or administer a lie detector test as a condition of employment or
continued employment. An employer who violates this law shall be
subject to criminal penalties and civil liability. The WHOOP
compensation philosophy is designed to attract, motivate, and
retain exceptional talent by offering competitive base salaries,
meaningful equity, and consistent pay practices that reflect our
mission and core values. At WHOOP, we view total compensation as
the combination of base salary, equity, and benefits, with equity
serving as a key differentiator that aligns our employees with the
long-term success of the company and allows every member of our
corporate team to own part of WHOOP and share in the company’s
long-term growth and success. The U.S. base salary range for this
full-time position is $165,000-$195,000. Salary ranges are
determined by role, level, and location. Within each range,
individual pay is based on factors such as job-related skills,
experience, performance, and relevant education or training. In
addition to the base salary, the successful candidate will also
receive benefits and a generous equity package. These ranges may be
modified in the future to reflect evolving market conditions and
organizational needs. While most offers will typically fall toward
the starting point of the range, total compensation will depend on
the candidate’s specific qualifications, expertise, and alignment
with the role’s requirements.
